PUBLIC ACCESS GOES DIGITAL

Our state-of-the-art Sony digital editing system, utilizing Premiere 6.5
and Premiere Pro, is available to Public Access members
for editing programs they produce and we air on Channel 3.
It allows producers to go from their camera or ours, insert pictures,
transfer from digital memory cards, or move digital video from cameras
to DVD format. Use our equipment, your equipment, or a combination of
the two to produce programs of interest for our viewers in Longmont
who are Comcast Cable subscribers.

For a cost of only $25 for training and materials, you can become a
Public Access member if you live within the boundaries of
St. Vrain Valley School District. When we have several potential
new members, we will have a three-hour training class on a weeknight
or Saturday morning, then you are eligible to check out our camera,
tripods, and lighting, and I will help you plan your program.

We can pull a crew together from our other members if you need help,
then one of our expert and very patient trainers will help you learn to
do digital editing. Some computer skills are necessary. When your
program is finished, the Public Access Coordinator will schedule it
and air it on Channel 3.

THe PA Coordinator will help you figure out how and where to promote
your program, and it will be advertised on our bulletin board and/or
website. Then, after you produce a program or help someone else
with theirs, your annual membership fee is waived for the next year.

NEW PUBLIC ACCESS PRODUCTIONS

Bob Dornan produced Humorous Interps, performed by his son’s high
school students and with help from another member, Doug Clayton,
also captured the fifth annual Longmont Handbell Festival.

Philippe and Rolande Bridenne brought us a summer day trip on
the ski train to the mountains, a good way to cool off in the heat
of summer or plan for a fall ski trip.

Andrew Phillips helped our longtime Longmont Barbershop Chorus
producer, Paul West, and brought their latest production,
“Sunny Side Up,” to the screens of Channel 3.

EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS

Two of our Public Access members, Bill Decker and Bob Masson,
will be working on another project with Newspaper in Education at
the “Daily Times-Call,” this time featuring the science of nutrition and
spotlighting local classrooms of sixth-grade students. Related articles
will be featured in the newspaper.

The literacy project we partnered on last year---“Reading the Sky”---
produced by Bill Decker, has won many newspaper contests and is
now entered in an international contest in France. It was based on
the “breakfast serial” stories and featured many local students and
a different school for each of the 13 chapters. Teachers were very
pleased to finally have something on video that tied in with the written
word; the pre-recorded programs were aired on Channel 3 the same
day that chapter appeared in the newspaper. This was the first time a
project like this had ever been done, and we thank Cindy Piller,
Newspaper in Education Coordinator at the “Daily Times-Call,”
for her help and cooperation.

NATIONAL VIDEO CONTEST

Channel 3 Public Access members served as judges again for the
fourth year for the Hometown Video Contest, reviewing the work of
other Public Access stations and government stations from all over the
United States and Canada. This year we reviewed 69 programs, both
professional and non-professional. It’s a great way to see what others
are doing, and we get to air the programs on our channel. So if you
see some unfamiliar names and places that don’t look like Colorado,
it’s probably a program from the contest. The work of our own members
again equals and excels much of what we judged, and this is a good
way to pick up new ideas and technical tips.

Some of the contest entries we kept to broadcast in Longmont are:

Music
Jazz Fest with Nick Colionne
Indiana University Soul Revue: Shades of Soul
Jazz in the Alley – a tribute to Oscar Brown, Jr.
All Night Long: Zydeco in New England
